Brooklyn North Businesses: Get Ready for Commercial Waste Zones
October 1 marks an important change for commercial waste collection in North Brooklyn. Here’s what local businesses need to know.
New York City’s Commercial Waste Zone program is coming to Brooklyn North this fall. Businesses in Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Bushwick and Bedford-Stuyvesant should begin preparing now.
The Brooklyn North transition period begins October 1, 2026. Businesses will have through November 30 to enter into a new agreement with a private carter authorized to operate in the zone. Brooklyn North becomes fully implemented on December 1, 2026.

What Are Commercial Waste Zones?
New York City’s Commercial Waste Zone program divides the city into 20 geographic zones, with a limited number of authorized carters providing curbside commercial waste collection in each.
Previously, numerous private carters could serve businesses along the same streets, creating overlapping collection routes. According to the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY), the new system is designed to create more efficient routes, reduce truck traffic and pollution, improve safety and customer service, and encourage recycling and waste reduction.
What Brooklyn North Businesses Need to Do
Businesses that use private waste collection will need to enter into a new written agreement with an authorized Brooklyn North carter during the transition period. Existing service arrangements do not automatically satisfy the new requirements.
The key dates are:
October 1: Customer sign-up begins
November 30: Sign-up period ends
December 1: Brooklyn North is fully implemented
Businesses that don't select an authorized carter during the transition period may be assigned one at the maximum allowable rate, so there is good reason to start the process early.

Consider how much waste your business generates, how frequently you need pickups and what kinds of recyclable materials you produce. Restaurants, retailers, offices and other businesses can have very different requirements, and the right service plan should reflect how your operation actually works.
