Brooklyn South Commercial Waste Zone Is Now Live: What Local Businesses Should Know

As of January 1, 2026, Brooklyn South has officially entered New York City’s Commercial Waste Zones (CWZ) program.

Businesses in the zone are now required to work with an authorized hauler approved by the Department of Sanitation (DSNY).

Only those haulers meeting DSNY standards may collect commercial waste and recycling in the area.

Why This Matters

Local Law 199 of 2019 created 20 commercial waste zones across New York City, each served by up to three approved haulers. The CWZ program aims to:

  • Enhance safety and accountability in private waste collection

  • Reduce truck congestion and vehicle-miles traveled (VMT), with early pilots showing reductions between 49% and 68%

  • Provide consistent, high-quality service with transparent pricing by setting maximum rates for each zone

What Businesses in Brooklyn South Need to Do

Now that the zone is active:

  • Choose an authorized hauler. If your business hasn’t signed a service agreement, DSNY may assign one for you. Signing early ensures you can select the provider that best fits your needs.

  • Formalize your agreement. All commercial waste and recycling services—including containers, compactors, and organics—must be covered under a written contract.

  • Benefit from improved service standards. Authorized haulers meet strict safety, sustainability, and reporting requirements under CWZ.

  • Understand your rates. Maximum rates are now in effect. Your business can enjoy predictable pricing, fewer surprises, and stronger accountability.

  • Start planning your service. Even though the zone is live, early communication with your chosen hauler will ensure a smooth transition and uninterrupted service.
