Cogent Insights: July 2026

As summer reaches its peak, New York City's Commercial Waste Zone transition continues to gain momentum. Businesses in both Staten Island and Midtown South are now in the enrollment period and have until August 31 to select one of their zone's three authorized waste providers before the new system takes effect on September 1. This month, we're highlighting what businesses need to know about the transition, along with practical tips for keeping waste and recycling operations running smoothly during the summer heat.

Staten Island Businesses:

Enrollment is Underway

The Commercial Waste Zone transition is now underway in Staten Island, and businesses throughout the borough have until August 31 to select one of the City's three authorized waste providers before the new system officially takes effect on September 1.

As one of only three licensed providers serving Staten Island, Cogent Waste Solutions is helping businesses navigate the transition with dependable waste and recycling services tailored to their operational needs. If you have not yet finalized your collection arrangements, now is the time. Delaying your decision could result in unnecessary stress as the enrollment deadline approaches.

Cogent also proudly supports Staten Island's long-term sustainability goals through Staten Island C&D, our construction and demolition recycling facility. By responsibly processing construction and demolition debris, we're helping recover valuable materials while reducing landfill waste and supporting a cleaner future for the borough.

Midtown South Businesses:

Don't Wait to Secure Your Service

Businesses throughout Herald Square, Union Square, Flatiron, NoMad, Koreatown, One Penn Plaza, and portions of Chelsea are also in the Commercial Waste Zone enrollment period. Like Staten Island, Midtown South businesses have until August 31 to select one of the zone's three authorized waste providers before the new waste collection system begins on September 1.

Although the deadline is still several weeks away, enrolling early gives businesses time to evaluate collection schedules, container needs, recycling programs, and equipment requirements while avoiding a last-minute rush before the transition takes effect.

Cogent Waste Solutions provides comprehensive waste and recycling services throughout Midtown South, including dumpsters, compactors, containerized collection, and customized pickup schedules designed to meet the needs of businesses large and small. If your business has not yet selected a provider, now is the ideal time to make the transition with confidence.

Proper Recycling Starts

with the Right Partner

A recent report highlighted the importance of proper recycling practices after one large public organization was found to have improperly handled recyclable materials over several years. According to the report, the organization lost between $107,000 and $158,000 annually, totaling nearly $800,000 over five years in missed recycling credits and unnecessary disposal costs because recyclable materials were not consistently separated and processed correctly.

Proper recycling helps businesses avoid unnecessary disposal costs, reduce the risk of compliance issues, and keep valuable materials out of landfills.

Cogent Waste Solutions makes recycling easier through single-stream recycling, allowing businesses to recover paper, cardboard, plastics, metals, and other recyclable materials with a simple, efficient collection process.

Our sustainability efforts also include organics collection, transforming food waste into compost, renewable energy, and innovative agricultural programs such as mushroom cultivation, helping businesses support New York City's long-term zero waste goals.

Summer Heat Can Put Your

Waste Service to the Test

Summer temperatures can create new challenges for businesses when it comes to waste management. Heat accelerates odor, attracts pests, and can cause dumpsters and containers to reach capacity more quickly, particularly for restaurants, grocery stores, and other businesses that generate food waste.

Now is a good time to evaluate whether your current collection schedule still meets your needs. Increasing pickup frequency during the summer months can help minimize odors, reduce pest activity, and keep your property clean and welcoming for employees, customers, and tenants.

Cogent Waste Solutions works with businesses across New York City to develop collection schedules that adapt to seasonal demands. Whether you need additional pickups, different container sizes, or a customized waste and recycling program, our team is here to help keep your operation running smoothly all summer long.
