As July approaches, Staten Island is taking center stage in the next phase of New York City’s Commercial Waste Zone rollout, with the program set to begin on July 1, 2026. At the same time, Midtown South businesses are also preparing for their own CWZ transition, with sign-up beginning the same day and service going live later this summer.
In this issue, we break down what each zone needs to know ahead of launch and will share an important update on Memorial Day service schedules across the city.
Staten Island CWZ Rollout
Begins July 1, 2026
In Staten Island, the Commercial Waste Zone (CWZ) rollout is set to begin on July 1, 2026. Cogent Waste Solutions is proud to be one of the three licensed providers selected to serve the borough. As the new system approaches, we’ll continue sharing updates to help businesses and property owners understand what’s changing and how to prepare ahead of the sign-up period running from July 1 through August 31, 2026.
Locally, our Staten Island operations, including Staten Island C&D, continue to support construction and demolition recycling across New York City. Our facility processes large volumes of material daily and handles everything from metal, wood, and rock to common renovation debris like sheetrock, furniture, and appliances, with a focus on efficient sorting and responsible recycling.
Not So Fast, Midtown South —
Your Rollout Also Starts July 1
Not so fast, Midtown South. While Staten Island is preparing for its CWZ rollout, your Commercial Waste Zone transition is also moving forward on the same timeline, beginning July 1, 2026. Businesses across Herald Square, Union Square, Flatiron District, NoMad, Koreatown, One Penn Plaza, and parts of Chelsea should already be planning for upcoming changes to NYC waste service requirements.
For the Midtown South zone, customer sign-up opens July 1, 2026, with enrollment running through August 31, and service officially going live on September 1, 2026. Cogent Waste Solutions will provide full-service waste and recycling collection throughout the area, including curbside pickup, dumpsters, compactors, and containers sized to match operational needs. To avoid disruptions, businesses should select an authorized carter early so service is fully in place when the zone goes live.
Honoring Memorial Day:
Holiday Service Schedule Update
In observance of Memorial Day, Cogent Waste Solutions will adjust its service schedule across the city. Operations will be closed in Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island on Sunday, May 24, and closed in Manhattan on Monday, May 25. If a customer’s scheduled pickup falls on a closure date, they should contact Cogent to arrange a rescheduled service.
Memorial Day is a time to honor and remember those who have served, and we join our communities in reflecting on the values of service and sacrifice.
Regular service will resume following the holiday closures, and any affected routes will be serviced on the next scheduled collection day.
