As we head toward the second quarter of 2026, momentum continues to build across New York City’s evolving waste landscape. With the Lower Manhattan Commercial Waste Zone launch just days away, now is the time for businesses to finalize their plans and prepare for a smooth transition. In this issue, we also highlight how Zero Waste programs can be implemented with ease (even at scale) and share a recent partnership supporting new retail locations across the city.
Lower Manhattan CWZ Launch Is Right Around the Corner
The countdown is on for Lower Manhattan businesses.
Starting April 1, New York City’s Commercial Waste Zone (CWZ) program will officially take effect across Lower Manhattan. That means businesses in the area will be required to work with an authorized waste and recycling provider.
The zone includes the Financial District, Battery Park City, Tribeca, and parts of Chinatown, along with surrounding neighborhoods. With the launch just days away, now is the time to finalize your service plan to avoid any disruptions and stay fully compliant with Department of Sanitation (DSNY) requirements.
Cogent is proud to be an authorized hauler in both Brooklyn South and Lower Manhattan. If your business is located in the upcoming Manhattan zone, acting now will help ensure a smooth, seamless transition ahead of the April 1 deadline.

Zero Waste in Action: A Seamless Transition at Scale
Implementing a Zero Waste program might sound complex, but in practice, it can be surprisingly simple.
In a recent video, a representative from Northwell Health’s Staten Island University Hospital shares how easily their team rolled out Cogent's Zero Waste program, even while operating a high-volume kitchen serving more than 2,000 meals per day.
Through brief team huddles, daily meetings, and straightforward staff orientation, the hospital quickly shifted food scraps from trash to designated organics bins. The result? A smooth, efficient transition with immediate impact, and no disruption to daily operations.
This real-world example highlights what’s possible when sustainability is approached in a practical, scalable way. Whether you’re managing a hospital, commercial kitchen, or large facility, the path to waste diversion doesn’t have to be complicated.
At Cogent, we partner with organizations to make Zero Waste achievable, helping teams implement smarter systems that work from day one.
